Amsterdam, the Venice of the Netherlands

Amsterdam, often referred to as the Venice of the Netherlands, is a city renowned for its picturesque canals, historic architecture, and vibrant culture. Known for its beautiful streets, delicious desserts, and a nightlife that never sleeps, Amsterdam offers a unique blend of old-world charm and modern vibrancy. The transportation connectivity throughout the country is just superb and travelling is very easy. Simply search your destination on Google Maps, reach the station accordingly, and tap your ticket—either a physical ticket or a scan code on your mobile—on the bus or train, and you’re ready to go. This city is also famous for its museums, including the Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank House, as well as its rich history and welcoming atmosphere. We did not visit the museums though. Here’s a detailed account of my recent trip to this captivating city.

Day 1: Discovering Jordaan and De 9 Straatjes
Jordaan Streets and Museums
On the first day, we explored the famous Jordaan streets, characterized by colourful symmetrical houses and scenic canals. Our first stop was the Cheese Museum, where we sampled a variety of cheeses. Our favourite was goat milk cheese. Following this, we visited the Tulip Museum since it wasn’t tulip season to visit the actual gardens.

Apple Pie at Winkel 43
In Jordaan, we indulged in the renowned apple pie with cream at Winkel 43, located at Noordermarkt 43. It was so delicious that I highly recommend trying it at least once.

Exploring De 9 Straatjes
Next, we ventured into De 9 Straatjes, known for its vibrant streets and boutiques. Here, we enjoyed the famous fries at Fabel Friet, served with cheese, mayonnaise, and a spicy sauce of your choice. They were incredibly tasty!

Evening Boat Ride
In the evening, we took a one-hour boat ride with Lovers Canal Cruises from Amsterdam Central. We had purchased an “Amsterdam & Region Travel Pass,” but I highly recommend the “I Amsterdam Travel Pass” as it includes these boat rides, various museum entries, and unlimited access to trains, buses, trams, and ferries.

Nightlife at Reidseplein and De Wallen
Late at night, we explored the lively streets of the Reidseplein area and De Wallen. Amsterdam is a real party place, especially at night, offering a nightlife experience like nowhere else.

Day 2: Visiting Weesp and Muiden Castle
Exploring Weesp
The next day, we visited Weesp, a small village close to Amsterdam known for its windmills and peaceful ambience. You can easily reach Weesp by train or bus. The village features beautiful lakes, pathways, and the serene sounds of church bells.

Touring Muiden Castle
We also visited Muiden Castle (Muiderslot), a stunning medieval castle. The preserved construction, punishment dungeons, and royal rooms transported us back to the medieval period. The weather was perfect for exploring the castle’s exterior and gardens.

Nightlife Adventures Continued
Leidseplein and Dutch Snacks
The next night, we returned to the Dam Square and then to the Leidseplein area. This time, we enjoyed fries from Chipsy King and a popular Dutch snack, croquettes from Febo. We also eat ice cream at Dolce and Gelato. We spent the rest of the night at the famous Paradiso club.

Tips for Visiting Amsterdam:

  1. Using Google Maps for Easy Travel Planning: To find directions to a location and check the next available bus or train, simply search for the location on Google Maps and go to the directions tab. It will display all available modes of transportation along with the walking time in between. You can also search for routes between specific destinations for a given time and date. Using this feature makes your travel easy and hassle-free.
  2. Weather Preparedness: The weather in Amsterdam is unpredictable. Always carry an umbrella and layers of warm clothes.
  3. Travel Pass: Buy an “I Amsterdam” travel card instead of the “Amsterdam & Region Travel Card.” Vending machines for these cards are available at every station throughout the city. I recommend purchasing them online, as the price is the same, and you can scan the tickets anywhere from your mobile. I lost my card and had to purchase one more(jaate hi 21 Euros ka phatka).
  4. Itinerary Planning: If you plan to visit nearby villages like Giethoorn or Zaanse Schans, start early in the morning as travel time is considerable.
  5. Budget-Friendly Eateries: For budget-friendly food options, visit Albert Heijn stores, which are also available inside Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. The airport offers numerous vegetarian restaurant options, and you can access the airport plaza anytime without a boarding pass.
  6. SIM Card Purchase: Buy a SIM card in the local market instead of at the airport to save money. I bought a 15 GB net pack SIM card from Lyca, which is valid throughout Europe.
  7. Accommodation: Choose a hotel close to a train or bus station for easy transportation around the city. We stayed at the Novotel Hotel at Hoofddrop (just a min walk from the Hoofddrop station and very close to the Schiphol airport station(it was just the next station from our station))

Conclusion
Amsterdam is a city that offers something for everyone, from its historic museums and charming streets to its lively nightlife and picturesque villages. Whether you’re a history buff, a food lover, or simply looking to experience a new culture, Amsterdam will not disappoint. Our trip was filled with memorable experiences, delicious food, and beautiful sights. I hope my travel tips and experiences help you plan your own unforgettable journey to this amazing city. Safe travels!

Sometimes it feels like pouring my heart out. What better than writing blogs. My son started writing blogs. I too found it interesting, and followed the suit. Hope you enjoy reading my blogs.
