Viraj’s Monopoly-Themed Birthday Party

“Go Directly to Fun, Do Not Pass Boredom!”

My son Viraj turned 7 this year, and his love for Monopoly inspired a spectacular birthday party. With his current obsession for the game, we knew a Monopoly-themed party would be the perfect way to celebrate. From creating a life-sized game to organizing unique activities, here’s a recap of how we brought Monopoly to life for Viraj and his friends.

Viraj plays the Indian version of Monopoly, so I designed Indian city tickets for the game, printed them on cardboard, and hung them in a square format around our chowk, attaching them to four poles. We also created a cardboard jail, which added an authentic touch to the venue. The oversized dice, made from gift boxes, were a hit. To save paper, Shantanu, Viraj’s dad, coded a digital system to manage money counting, Community Chest, and Chance cards. A large Monopoly Man poster overlooked the gaming area, making it feel like the real Monopoly Man was monitoring the game.

Aside from the live Monopoly game, another highlight was the “Catch the Raindrops” game. We sprinkled shredded paper from the jaali in our chowk, and the kids had to catch the pieces in bowls. The group that collected the most paper won, creating a scene of raining Monopoly money. The children also enjoyed our traditional “Khachra fight” game, which involves playful paper stripe fights, adding to the ultimate fun.

In another game, the kids stood in a circle and threw a ball to each other. When a child caught the ball, the adjacent kids had to sit down, and anyone who didn’t was out. The last kid standing was the winner.

While we set up the meal table, Shantanu entertained the kids with “The Floor is Lava” and the famous Mario game on YouTube, keeping them perfectly occupied.

When it was time to eat, the delicious spread included pasta, fried idli for the kids, idli sambar for the adults, Monaco aloo treats, smileys, chocolate mud pudding, and, of course, the cake. The cake, a Monopoly-themed picture cake, the picture for which was designed by me, perfectly captured the party’s theme. For return gifts, each child received a DIY fridge magnet kit, which they loved.

“As the Party Ended, We Collected More Than Just $500, and we all felt like we had just hit the Jackpot!”

The celebration was a resounding success, full of laughter, games, and great food. It was a true testament to how a simple board game can inspire such creativity and joy. Viraj and his friends had an unforgettable time, and as we cleaned up, I couldn’t help but feel we had all passed ‘GO’ and collected memories far more valuable than Monopoly money. Here’s to many more fun-filled birthdays and countless rolls of the dice in life’s big game!

Sometimes it feels like pouring my heart out. What better than writing blogs. My son started writing blogs. I too found it interesting, and followed the suit. Hope you enjoy reading my blogs.
